I meet all sorts of people, but never had the experience of feeling that someone was “bad” and it turning out to be true. I’ve met criminals, lawyers, despots, gangsters, drug lords, union busters, teachers, and so on — but I don’t distinguish between them with a moral compass. I use a far more fallible, far more inaccurate gauge of their personality: how well they can carry on a conversation with me. I’m also a bit of a self-diagnosed sociopath, so maybe I’m the odd duck out.
